Scottrade charges $7.00 dollars per purchase, and within the 6 years that I've used them they have never had their site down. So I don't think they are unreliable at all. (ahem, Brian) However, they do require that you do put a minimum of $500 in your account within the first 90 days of you opening an account. Transfering money doesn't cost anything either if you use Direct Money Deposit. I personally think it's a great place to start if you guys want something basic and cost effective.
